Thorpe's Story
"I know i have something good and natural and good for them"
When Gayle and Mike Thorpe got married in 1981, they'd only known each other for 6 months. When they started Thorpe's Farm in 1981, neither of them had farmed before. But shortly after they wed, Gayle and Mike rented farmland in Springville, planted a strawberry field, and went on to buy their current location in East Aurora, NY and raise their 6 children in a country paradise.
Thorpe's Farm started as a conventional farm, but in 1999 they made the switch - cold turkey- to be a 100% organic farm after learning more about the chemicals they were using and the potential effects on their bodies.
"Customers come to your stand every day. How do you feel if you're giving them something questionable or that you have doubt in your mind about?" says Gayle.
Thorpe's Organic Family Farm, as they've been known ever since, has become a one-stop-shop for local food. Their fields grow dozens of varieties of fruits and vegetables, all grown with immense care, harvested at the peak of their season, and sold at height of freshness. They sell organic eggs and dairy products, and invite families to visit the farm and say hello to the animals.
For Thorpe's, growing organic food is about allowing your food to exist the way it was meant to, and in that way it will be more nutritious, more delicious, and more sustainable.
The Thorpe's Farm Stand is open year round and stocks not only their own produce, animal products, baked goods and prepared foods, but they are eager to support other small local businesses by selling their products as well.
Visit the Thorpe's Organic Farm Store on Strykersville Rd. in East Aurora to shop, see where your food comes from, or learn about their popular CSA.
